Aggers, as a long-time West Midlands resident, you'll remember the Metrobuses which were the mainstay of the fleet back in the 1980 and 90's (?) and were built at Washwood Heath.

There was a small batch which were fitted to coach specification as "luxury" express buses and used on the Walsall > Birmingham service. These had mock leather seats, did have "lap" seat belts fitted, certainly in the lower saloon. I can recall travelling on one long after they had been declassified back to "ordinary" services, and the seat belts were certainly still fitted - not that I or anyone else used them.

True, but it's to ensure you can stop if they start to change. Do they not have traffic light cameras up your way? :)

I did it all the time at the traffic-light controlled cross-roads just north of Erdington High Street which had d@mn Gatsos in both directions - probably long after they'd been decommissioned anyway ....

Approach to the lights was traditionally accompanied by the chanted mantra "Don't change, don't change, don't change, don't chan ..... ba%$£&^ds!"

London, no they don't have traffic light camera's....

Personally, I thought the Amber light was to tell you to get ready to stop??? Clearly I was wrong and I didn't read the highway code. Silly me, it's the Green one....   Sorry couldn't help the sarcasm.

Just like when it turns green it appears to mean the opposite.

Look (slowly)
Recognise (slowly)
Put car in gear (slowly)
Go as slowly as possible so only one or two other cars get through with you before it turns amber again.

My theory on travelling in the city, nowadays, is "traffic light management". Or you get nowhere slowly. It's why I prefer two wheels even if it comes with a cost in comfort and, sometimes, pain.

Oh, it is definitely the case with some modern knives, Aggers, especially those which are made 'for a purpose'.

I have an old set of Richardson knives. These are very slightly tapered from the spine to the cutting edge, and the taper is at the same angle for both sides. The cutting edge follows the same pattern so that whether we use a steel or a modern sharpener the angle is equal. They can be used in either hand.

But let us take a modern knife, a bread knife is a god example. They are ground in such a way so that the serrations are on one side. When a right-hander cuts bread the slice tends to fall away to the right - a nice neat slice. When a left-hander uses the same knife it tends to dig in to the bread and we end up with a wedge rather than a slice. The same is true for cheese knives, veg knives.....

LH knives are available, but they are very expensive.

Thanks for the explanation, Frank. I didn't know that.
It always surprises me just how many things I don't know. I find it amazing,
when I look through a dictionary, just how many words there are in it that
I don't know, and didn't know existed.

Here's another query:-

I understand that it is a requirement for people employed in the preparation and cooking
of food to cover their hair, presumably for hygiene reasons Fair enough - but I have often
seen, on T.V., chefs in eating house kitchens who have more hair on their faces than on the
tops of their heads. Why is this allowed?

That is a tough one as there seems to be no logic to it.

Beards don't moult ;)

It's not a requirement anyway, only in factories, actual food production.
Restaurant staff tend to have their hair tied back/up, not in one of those nets.

Thanks, Di.

That's answered that question to my satisfaction.

With all these lifelike cave drawings of boar, antelope, bison, deer etc., why are there no portraits of humans?
