Whoop whoop, step one done

Postby meriad » 16 Sep 2018, 13:34

Earlier in August I was at a friends for dinner and she was asking whether I'd started the process to apply for my British Citizenship which I hadn't. Thank goodness we spoke about it because she pointed out / reminded me (only because it was brought up on another FB page) that Germany have always had a one passport only rule (if it's not one of another EU country) and if you want to hold a 2nd non EU one you have to have special permission which isn't always granted - and come April next year UK will be considered a non EU country. So, cut a long story short I started the process. On Monday last week I got home to a 'sorry we missed you we have an item that needs signature' card which I couldn't collect until this morning... And there it was; step one - my official permanent residency backdated to May 2011. Which means I now need to get going with my Life in the UK and my English Language Tests... then lots and lots of paperwork I think and fingers crossed I get my UK Citizenship before end March next year so I can have both passports; my German and the UK one. Once I have them they can't take it away from me so there's a frantic dash for many people to get their UK passports asap

I'll admit that I'm a bit annoyed that I (and so many others) have to do all this but c'est la vie isn't it... this BREXIT cr*p isn't going to go away so best we accept and deal (and be poor in the process as it's going to cost a bucket load of money to do all this)

But for now - it's a whoop whoop; permanent residency is official and onwards and upwards with the next steps

Well done, Meriad, first stage of the process accomplished!

An old colleague and friend of mine married a Romanian lass, and I think she has dual passports now, UK and Romanian.

Pleased to hear this, Ria.

I was a little concerned of how Brexit would affect such as you.

By the way, we don't all think that this Brexit business is all crap.
